Cancer fighter’s next challenge

Pauline Rickards

Pauline Rickards

A courageous grandma who survived her battle against cancer will be putting her best foot forward in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.

Pauline Rickards, 61, from Euxton, will be trying to raise as much money as possible by taking part in the race at Moor Park in Preston on June 17.

In April last year, Pauline felt sore under her arm and found a lump on her breast.

She then received the devastating news that she had breast cancer.

Pauline underwent a mastectomy operation before embarking on a course of chemotherapy treatment at the Royal Preston Hospital, which lasted for five months.

In January, Pauline, who is a line dancing teacher in the local area, started a three week course of radiotherapy treatment – and since then all of her scans have come back clear.

She said: “It came as a real shock when I found out I had breast cancer and having a mastectomy hasn’t been easy – but I’m a cheerful and positive person and knew that this was something I could fight.

“The chemotherapy was difficult and once my hair started dropping out I got the rest shaved off.

“I’m still tired at times and have bad circulation, but this will go.

“I’m just so grateful that I have come out the other side and am now back teaching my dance classes again which is brilliant.”

Pauline, who has been supported by her husband Chris and their four children throughout her battle with the disease, is now looking forward to taking part in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.
