Can you help with history of Buckshaw Village?
ROF building work Euxton
Residents of Chorley are being asked to help with a special commemoration project.
As part of the Barratt Legacy Programme, Barratt Manchester, the Buckshaw Village Community Association and the Chorley Remembers project are working together to put together a Heritage Trail and Remembrance Exhibition, in order to keep the history of ROF Chorley alive.
As the residential development at ROF Chorley continues to progress. the developers want to get their hands on as many artefacts, photographs or written accounts of the factory in it’s heyday as possible.
They also want to demonstrate the impact the factory had on the north west of England and Chorley itself.
The former Royal Ordnance Factory site on Euxton Lane is now a groundbreaking 400-acre residential development.
It was opened in the 1930s to support the three existing Royal factories by moving the production of munitions and armaments away from the vulnerable London and south-east coast.
Now known as Buckshaw Village, the site of the former ROF was bought by Barratt Manchester, part of the nationwide house builders, and has been developed by many homebuilders into a selection of brand new properties.
Eager not to discard the site’s rich heritage, Barratt Manchester are now keen to hear from any residents of Chorley with any stories, pictures or artefacts detailing their experiences of life alongside this fascinating piece of World War II history, which will be proudly displayed in the Buckshaw Village Community Association headquarters.
The organisers of the Chorley Remembers project are fully supportive or the Buckshaw heritage Trail.
They hope to include interviews with former workers in the ‘video memories’ element of their Chorley based remembrance project.
