Elsie's memories of Woolworth's opening

Elsie Sutton of Chorley sent in this picture of herself with actor Ken Morley at the opening of Woolworths in Market Walk, following its move from Market Street.

The popular actor was the ideal person to open the new store – because he played supermarket manager Reg Holdsworth in the television soap Coronation Street.

He officially opened Woolworths in Market Walk in April 1995, attracting huge crowds.

Woolworths store manager, David Taylor, said before the event: "We're delighted that Ken has agreed to come along and join the celebrations.

"He knows a thing or two about the shop business, so who could be better to get our brand new store off to a flying start?

"He will be joining us for an hour from 11am and has promised to pose for photographs and sign autographs.

"We know he'll draw a big crowd and all the staff are looking forward to a bumper start to a new beginning for Woolworths in Chorley."

Mrs Sutton, of Chorley, was one of many people who turned up at the store's big opening.

She had known the store when it was in Market Street and was keen to see what the new one would be like as well as to see the actor.

She said: "I knew he would be there which is why I went along. I knew him from the television, from Coronation Street, and I knew he lived in Chorley.

"We regularly saw his car, a big pink Cadillac, in Saville Street. He was well known in Chorley.

"He asked if I would like my photograph taken with him and we chatted about the store opening and how nice it was.

"I miss the store now it's closed, not least because we used to nip through to the bus station and now we have to go all the way round."
