Golden memories to be revived at singles reunion

A woman who launched a successful club for single people 20 years ago, is organising a reunion for its members.

Joy Logan started Golden Chain Singles with a Valentines Day dance in 1989 which was held in Hoghton Village Hall.

At the first dance, there were just 30 people, but by the time she left the club, 10 years later there were about 150 members - and the club is still going strong, but is now run by someone else.

Joy set up the club because she was a single mum, who had been medically retired from work and who had organised things all her life.

Joy, of Brinscall, said: "I went to a club with a friend and I thought 'I can do this for people more locally'. After that first dance at Hoghton, the club met regularly at the Euxton Social Club on Euxton Lane. We also had a rambling club and held numerous cabarets, theatre trips, house parties and holidays abroad.

"We have had some members who have got married after meeting at the club."

Joy ran the club until 1999 when she had to stop on ill health grounds.

She said: "I gave it up because I couldn't rock and roll any more because I had to have a heart bypass operation."

The club has continued successfully at St Joseph's Club in Harpers Lane, Chorley, after Bolton Wanderers Football Club bought the Euxton Lane Social Club.

Now Joy, who has started going back to the club after a second successful heart bypass, is planning a reunion dinner dance at Oak Royal Golf Club, Withnell, on Thursday, March 26.

She said: "I hadn't realised it was 20 years ago that I set it up. It is quite a milestone and I think it's worthy of celebrating. I have spoken to the current organiser of the club so I'm not treading on any toes, but he is very supportive."

Anyone interested in joining the reunion can contact Joy on 01254 831011 for more details.
