Library’s display of historic teaching methods shows local schoolroom

A library has gone back to the classroom with a display of school stories and early instruction books.
The Harris Library and the Harris Museum and Art Gallery in Preston has this photograph of a classroom taken at Leyland St Mary’s School, which dates back to around 1950/51.
It’s part of the Back to School display, which includes items selected from the Spencer Collection of Children’s Books was set up by local collector John Henry Spencer in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
From the mid-18th century, publishers began to find ingenious ways to encourage children to read.
Miniature reading books were published in small wooden bookcases that resembled the furniture found in dolls’ houses and alphabets were printed on cardboard bats for use in the popular game of battledore and shuttlecock, an early form of badminton.
Colourful illustrations and rhymes were also used to make the teaching of subjects such as musical notation and currency an entertaining experience for both the children and the adults.
