Mystery photos of Chorley supporters

Chorley Football Club is appealing for help to identify a package of more than 50 photographs that were mysteriously sent to them.

The black and white pictures were sent from someone in South Africa, but no details of the sender or the people pictured were included.

One of the photos, which are believed to date back to the 1950s or 60s, is of a group of young fans at Victory Park, while another was taken in St Helens, with the town's large chimneys visible in the background.

Club director Geoff Haslam discovered the pictures while looking through the club's post.

He said: "There was no note or letter with the pictures. It is strange that they chose not to include a name or address.

"I think the envelope was sent from South Africa, shown by a faint post-mark."

He said one rumour was that the photos were sent from a mysterious Magpies fans called Chris Haworth, who used to live in Corporation Street but left the town several years ago.

Geoff added. "I don't know if it's true. A few people have mentioned the name, he apparently was a big Chorley fan.

"I hope this article can help us trace the person who sent us the pictures."

The photos have a special significance for Geoff, as his father and uncle are both featured.

He said: "When I opened the envelope one of the first pictures I saw had my dad on it. I've shown them to him and my uncle and they think they are great. It gives people a chance to reminisce."

Geoff admitted that things had changed at Victory Park since the photos were taken.

"Looking at the pictures is funny," said the lifelong Magpies' fan. "Seeing how people used to dress in a shirt and tie at a game is very different to Victory Park now."

One of the pictures shows a teddy bear being held aloft by a supporter.

The photos are to be put on display in Chorley FC's clubhouse for the enjoyment of the club supporters.
