Leyland Band rehearsal

The Leyland Band are playing loud and proud.

Not usually ones to blow their own trumpet, the brass band, which traces its history back to 1946, will perform at the European Brass Band Championships in Oslo in May and are looking for ideas to raise much needed funds.

Andrew Blackledge, the band’s development officer and cornet player, from New Longton, says: “To compete in the championships we need to raise £20,000.

“As we’re starting from scratch we need to think of as many fundraising ideas as possible.”

The band, who have 28 players plus a support committee, practice twice a week but for competitions the players must put in extra work.

Though the name may suggest their players all derive from Lancashire, many of the band’s personnel are drawn from all over the United Kingdom and beyond with the current line up boasting players from Norway, Australia and Luxembourg.

With an average age of 23, the band’s youngest member is aged 15, with the oldest aged 50.

Gary Westwood, a cornet player is the group’s longest serving member with an astonishing 30 years under his belt.

Ranked sixth in the world Leyland Band also stays loyal to its roots by take part in many local events including a performance on Remembrance Sunday every year.

The band has also arranged a special concert in support of this venture called ‘A European Journey’ on Saturday April 13 at 7.30 at UCLan’s, Mitchell Kenyon Theatre, Corporation Street, Preston.
