400 jobs boost as Royal Mail sets sights on town

Proposed Royal Mail distribution centre on Buckshaw Village

Proposed Royal Mail distribution centre on Buckshaw Village

A huge new distribution centre will create up to 400 jobs near Leyland.

Royal Mail is set to create a 300,000 sq ft distribution centre on Buckshaw Village’s Revolution Park.

The ‘North West processing centre’ for postal arm Parcelforce Worldwide will be a hub of activity with two massive building housing 400 staff, over 300 parking spaces, and space for over 200 lorries.

The scheme, planned for land between Wolseley and Stewart Milne homes, is owned by Evander Properties, who are also behind a similar scheme to bring supermarket giant Waitrose to the town.

Neil Dickinson, director for Evander Properties said: “We are very pleased to have attracted Royal Mail to the park.

“All of the consultation has been started and largely completed and we are expecting to have the application before Chorley Council’s planning committee on April 24.

“We have been in dialogue with Royal Mail for some months. The application has been well received and having a significant employer and investor like Parcelforce is a good thing for any local authority in this current climate.”

News of the jobs has been welcomed in the community and by community leaders.

Kaye Davies, chairman of Buckshaw Village Community Association, said: “It’s great news for the area and a real boost in the current climate.

“We want to make sure people know about this so the jobs can go to local people.

Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle also welcomed the news, saying: “This really is positive news and comes at the right time as we see unemployment rising.

“It’s really important for the future of the economy locally and it certainly makes Buckshaw Village sustainable.

“This will create opportunities for local people, and that’s what it’s all about.”

Royal Mail Group spokesman James Eadie said: “The planning application relates to a potential new Parcelforce Worldwide site in the North West of England.

“The land on which the application has been made does not currently belong to Parcelforce Worldwide, and at this point no plans are finalised. If consent is granted, any plans would take into account the local green belt and we believe they would be in keeping with the council’s aspiration for the site.

“The proposal, if it were to proceed, would represent a large investment and would create a significant number of jobs in the area.”
