Daughter inspired mum to go organic

It was when Alison Rothwell was looking for clothes for her new baby daughter, Ruby, who suffers from eczema, that she came up with an idea for a business.

She wanted to provide only the best natural materials to help her young daughter and was horrified to find out just how many chemicals are used in processing natural cotton.

Because of that Alison, from Adlington, turned her attention to organic cotton but struggled to find places she could buy clothes made from 100 per cent organic cotton.

So last October she launched Arabella Miller, named after her favourite nursery rhyme and with a caterpillar from the rhyme as her logo, and her business designing and selling a range of organic cotton clothes for children aged from birth to six years is growing from strength to strength.

And now she has reached the finals of two national awards - the Mum-preneur competition on ITV's This Morning programme and the Best Green business category of the 2008 StartUps Awards.

Alison, a former Anderton Primary, Albany High School and Runshaw College pupil is the first person in the UK to do a completely organic T-shirt, including the ink the design is printed with, and she even has Soil Association accreditation.

Working with a graphic designer, the 38-year-old mother of Martha, nine, and Ruby, two, started off with T-shirts with pictures of space, pets and mini-beasts.

Now she has expanded into a range of baby clothes, using the same designs, and is currently sourcing organic supplies, including organic denim, for her next range of clothes for children aged from six to 11 years.

The former civil servant has just rented a room above Town and Village estate agency in Babylon Lane, Adlington, after she and partner Ron Oultram realised it was taking over their home.

Now Alison has a thriving online business, plus around 50 shops stock her goods, and she has just got herself an American agent and is recruiting an Australian agent to get her range on sale worldwide.
