Tunit device cleans up motoring

He's hardly a household name but Chorley businessman Michael Bromley is emerging from the credit crunch as one of the area's success stories.

His device - called Tunit - might have the experts on Dragon's Den scratching their heads but there's no denying it's captured the interest of the owners of diesel vehicles.

Suitable for all modern diesel engines, the Tunit device improves performance by up to 30 per cent and can save up to 10 per cent on fuel.

It takes just 30 minutes to install in most vehicles and does not affect the existing engine's reliability or warranty.

Either way its success means Mr Bromley is definitely on the right road.

The 39-year-old launched Tunit in 1998 with a turnover of 45,000.

Now the company in Leigh Street turns over more than a million pounds a year and is a global business.

The former Parklands High School pupil, left, when he was 16 and began his working career at Gilbraith Commercials, in Chorley, which is now Botany Bay Villages.

Qualified as an HGV diesel mechanic he and a 'fellow geek' came up with an idea in 1998 that could increase the performance of diesel engines.

The result was 'Tunit' and in 2002 the invention was branded worldwide.

He's never looked back since and they now have offices in 15 countries and more than 1,000 agents.

Mr Bromley said: "We've increased the business 40 per cent year-on-year and 2008 is no exception, in fact we had a record month in July. We definitely appear to be bucking the trend and put it down to the fact our products are so right for the current climate. We started in a small way in 1998 and invested in research and development. We launched it under the Tunit brand and from there on business took off overnight."

Mr Bromley, who is single, expanded the range to seven Tunit products now available priced from 350 to cover every diesel application (2000+).

"The thing about the Tunit is that it does actually work," said the businessman. "People try it, tell their friends and before we knew it, we had a major business on our hands."

The Tunit is ideal for domestic cars as well as light commercial vehicles and agricultural machinery.

"Motoring has become such a dirty word and we've been made to feel a sense of guilt about using our cars. The Tunit is an innovative device that saves fuel while also improving performance, it won't affect your warranty and, in most cases, pays for itself within a year."
