Abduction (12 – Dir: John Singleton – Stars: Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins, Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs)

Abduction is a teen spy thriller with a new twist.

Twenty minutes in and Nathan (Lautner) is being put through painful self-defence routines by his brutal dad (Isaacs).

It’s only when we realise why that the plot takes off and Nathan is cast adrift just ahead of chasing CIA agents and a ruthless gang of killers. Struggles on the credibility monitor.

30 Minutes or Less (15 – Dir: Ruben Fleischer – Stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Danny McBride, Nick Swardson)

Two wannabe criminal masterminds (McBride and Swardson) need $100,000 to set up a tanning salon which will be a front for a far more lucrative brothel.

Rather than rob a bank themselves, they hit on the cunning ruse of kidnapping some local loser to do it for them. In case this victim doesn’t want to rob a bank, they strap a bomb to his chest by way of incentive. Nick (Eisenberg), a pizza delivery boy, is that loser.

The film drags setting up the plot, and much of McBride’s deadpan delivery misfires, but once the action gets underway it explodes into a spiral of calamity as Nick seizes the chance to throw off his loser tag.

Tucker and Dale v Evil (15 – Dir: Eli Craig – Stars: Alan Tudyk, Tyler Labine, Katrina Bowden)

A fun reversal of the chainsaw massacre/college girl genre.

A group of students on field research in the woods happen upon two hillbillies of cinema legend.

But the pair, Tucker and Dale, are unworldly but honest locals lads, and as the gruesome death toll mounts remain mystified by this obvious suicide pact.

7/10

Crazy Stupid Love (12 – Dir: Glen Ficarra/John Requa – Stars: Steve Carroll, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore)

Fortysomething Cal(Carroll) begins a crash course in pulling power after his wife dumps him.

His instructor is good mate and supreme ladykiller Jacob (Gosling), but it soon become clear it’s tough putting in what God’s left out. Plus, the wife and kids are now involved in the swirl of emotions.

A stylish sex comedy with classy dialogue.
