Mr Popper’s Penguins (PG – Dir Mark Waters – Stars: Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino, Angela Lansbury)

Tom Popper is a workaholic who has put his career before his wife and two kids.

Then a package arrives from his long absent and now late dad, and from it springs a penguin. Five others follow and turn Mr Popper’s New York apartment into a snowy fun palace.

His new play mates begin to win his family around and force a re-evaluation on a wiser Mr Popper. Great fun.

I Am Number Four (12 – Dir: D J Caruso – Stars: Alex Pettyfer, Dianna Agron)

John Smith is just another teen going through all that familiar trouble with thuggish Jocks at an American high school until we realise he’s a little bit different.

It’s not just the Jocks he has to worry about. There is a bunch of Mogadorians who have it in for him as well. They are super tooled up thugs from another planet, John’s planet, and what follows is a fun fantasy battle of super powers, super weaponry and super-beasts.

Super 8 (12 – Dir: J J Abrams – Stars: Joel Courtney)

Six friends are making a film for a school competition with super 8 film when they accidentally record a train crash from which emerges an extra they hadn’t bargained for ... an alien.

As the army moves into town the friends battle to discover what’s going on before Joe (Courtney) decides he has to act to save the beast, and the locals it’s snatching as a food source.

An entertaining adventure around youth, mystery, and independence.

Faster (15 – Dir: George Tillman - Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton)

‘Driver’ emerges from prison on a mission. He grabs the nearest hot roadster and blasts off in pursuit of the snitches who stitched him up for a bank robbery ... and murdered his brother.

It’s a long hit list, but he’s ruthless. The cops are on his tail, and as the body count mounts and they get closer he still has no idea which of the snitches committed the murder.

An excellent thriller even though you’ll guess the final twist.

7/10
