Hot place to live in heart of the country

Spot for nature: Longton Brickcroft Nature Reserve

Spot for nature: Longton Brickcroft Nature Reserve

The South Ribble village of Longton has long been regarded as a property hotspot.

It lies just four miles south of Preston, but is surrounded by countryside, and has a charming village atmosphere.

It boasts good amenities with a supermarket, estate agents and other stores all being situated along Liverpool Road.

On the education front the village is blessed with two primary schools, but pupils must travel beyond Longton’s borders to attend high school and college.

St Andrew’s Parish Church stands proudly in the centre of the village, and has done so since 1887. It offers regular Sunday services as well as other events.

Longton also has an active parish council.

There is a sports and social club and a tennis club plus a horse riding club that holds regular events and shows. Sited next to the village is Longton Brickcroft Nature Reserve. This 11 hectare site was once a brickworks, but has now been transformed into a nature reserve, where there is a visitor centre, picnic site, fishing opportunities and plenty of wildlife. The Brickcroft is of particular interest to birdwatchers and botanists with seating and footpaths making it accessible for most visitors.

To the west of Longton are Longton Marshes, an area of marshland which lies at the confluence of the Rivers Douglas and Ribble. It is popular with birdwatchers as it is home to a large variety of wildfowl.

The 70-mile Ribble Way footpath starts at the marsh and follows its edge before joining the River Ribble.

As well as being a popular location with walkers, Longton is a favourite spot with horse riders.
