Restaurant review: Antonello’s, Leyland

Antonello's Italian Restaurant, Hough Lane, Leyland

Antonello's Italian Restaurant, Hough Lane, Leyland

Kay Taylor enjoyed a cheap visit to the secretive Antonello’s in Leyland

Hidden away above an Italian takeaway in Leyland, is the charming and quaint Antonello’s.

It’s a tiny room with only around 15 or 20 tables, but its intimate environment and warm atmosphere drew me to it, and I went along with my cousin Nicola to see if the food was as attractive as the restaurant itself.

It overlooks Hough Lane and is opposite the Leyland Lion pub, but sitting above the pizzeria below, you could be anywhere in the world.

The menu offers the usual pizzas and pastas, with sections for chicken, meats and fish too, and all the old favourites are on the list.

Nicola fancied a cheese and garlic bread to start with, and I ordered prawns in a garlic sauce while we each enjoyed a glass of wine (one red, one white).

I tried the garlic bread and it was very tasty, but it seems they forgot about my prawns and Nicola had almost finished her starter when they asked me if I was ready for my main!

I reminded them I’d also ordered a starter, and they immediately brought over a complimentary glass of red wine to apologise, shortly followed by the prawns, which were delicious.

The restaurant was packed, so it’s obviously very popular amongst those who know about it - maybe it’s not so hidden away after all.

Another of Antonello’s strong points, along with the beautiful layout, is the meal prices.

Most mains came in at under £6, and for two starters, two mains and two glasses of wine, the bill totalled just £27.

If I’m honest, the main courses weren’t as impressive as the starters, but for the price, they were spot on.

Nicola had tagliatelle in a tomato sauce with prawns, which she said was simple, but enjoyable, and I had cannelloni.

The big pasta parcels came with ‘special meat’, which was like mince meat, with a tomato sauce and spinach.

I was surprised that the spinach was in a mashed form rather than leafy, and it was more of a spinach pate, which was a bit strange.

It was tasty though, even if it didn’t look particularly appetising, and I ate up until I was full.

I’d definitely go back if I was looking for an affordable night out in the centre of Leyland, but I’m not sure it’s the kind of place you’d head for a special occasion.

And being right opposite the new Wetherspoons, it’s in an ideal location to nip across for a couple of drinks before heading home on a Friday night.

Kay must have been to this restaurant on a very good day - or must not eat out much! The menu is sadly limited - the food is mediocre - very poor quality cheap ingredients - the eating area is tiny and cramped , rickety tables with millimeters between you and other diners the staff are totally incompetent and rude - do not waste your money

Me and my girlfriend went to Antonello’s twice last year: Both times the service was slow and the food was dull and disappointing - avoid!
