The Poachers, Bamber Bridge
Natalie Banks visits the Poachers and samples their menu
My grandma has always insisted that the best things in life come in small packages.
That’s probably because she’s little over 5ft, and she regularly uses it as her defence.
But, with a 6ft 5in husband and a bulging pregnancy bump, I’m convinced that bigger is actually better.
And, if you were to judge food on portion sizes then The Poachers, in Bamber Bridge, would win every prize going.
I am not exaggerating when I say that I was gob-smacked when our food was brought to the table.
In fact I was speechless, which is certainly a rare occurrence for me (as my colleagues will be quick to tell you!)
We’d dropped in to the Fayre and Square pub on our way back from what has become a weekly trip to Mamas and Papas at Deepdale.
It had been a bit of a family day out with the in-laws, and my ‘new’ sister Amanda had recommend The Poachers for a bite to eat.
Sticking to the theme of bigger being better, the size of the pub itself also came as a bit of a surprise.
It stretched back table after table and there was countless seating areas - making it difficult for us to actually pick were to eat.
When we arrived on a busy Sunday afternoon there was a real hustle and bustle about the place.
At one end of the spectrum there were young families tucking in to their piled-up Sunday lunches and at the other were the ‘boys’ watching a game of football on the big screen.
But, with the pub being so big it made for a nice environment.
After moving tables a couple of times, in a bid to find the best spot, we finally sat down to peruse the menu.
The pub runs a great deal with two meals for £10, incredible value when you see the portion sizes.
With this in mind my mother-in-law and I opted for the fish and chips and my hubby went for the mixed grill (which wasn’t part of the deal) and Amanda stuck to the gammon which she had enjoyed on a previous visit.
We also ordered a round of drinks - including a nice glass of wine for the mother-in-law (who was still in shock at the price of the cot we had shown her for the baby!)
Our food arrived pretty quickly and I’m surprised the table didn’t give way under the weight of the plates.
My fish literally balanced on the large plate and was accompanied by a stack of tasty chips that could have literally fed three people.
The fish was ‘ok’ - what you’d expect from a chain pub and tasty enough, but the chips were absolutely delicious.
My hubby’s mixed grill was also a sight to be seen - and a challenge even for him to eat.
On all accounts the food was good, but I had another of my grandma’s sayings ringing in my ears ‘you get what you pay for.’
It was far from gourmet, but on an hungry Sunday afternoon the food at The Poachers hit the spot and left us full for the rest of the evening.
And, for little over £30 for four main courses and drinks there certainly wasn’t any complaints from the Dickinson clan.
The only next dilemma was working how to get out of the car park.
But, after circling a few times we managed to find the exit, and with our bellys full we headed for home - all with smiles on our faces.
