A woman in her 50s has been found dead in a canal.
The woman, who has not yet been formally identified, was discovered by a member of the public at around 12.37pm yesterday afternoon.
Police cordoned off a stretch of the Leeds Liverpool Canal in Adlington, near Chorley.
At this stage the death is not thought to be suspicious.
A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: “We got a call from a member of the public at 12.37pm to say there was a body in the water.
“A woman in her 50s or early 60s was found in the canal near to Harrison Road in Adlington.
“She has not yet been identified.
“There are a number of lines of enquiry to be followed.”
A number of police were at the scene and turning away walkers along that stretch of the towpath.
Police were also carrying out door-to-door inquiries and asking if anyone had seen the woman, believed to be wearing a blue waterproof jacket, walking along the canal.
One walker, who asked not to be named, said: “I was just told to turn back from my walk on the canal by police who said there had been an incident.”
