You’ve heard the one about the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker – but what about the butcher and the fishmonger?
A long-standing Leyland butcher has joined forces with a fishmonger to completely refresh his shop.
Dave’s Butchers on Golden Hill Lane is now called Turf and Surf, after he teamed up with friend Mick O’Hara, who runs a fish counter from Huntley’s Country Stores in Samlesbury.
The idea to bring everything under one roof came during a friendly drink at the pub.
Dave Lamb said: “The shop has been here for 13 years and I’ve had it for three.
“I thought it would be a great idea to start selling fish here because fish stalls are always jam-packed.
“Mick and I can feed off each other’s customers in a way, and we’re also selling veg and game.
“To be honest, my debts were quite high, so I thought I might struggle over Christmas.
“I mentioned the idea to Mick when we were at the pub a few weeks ago, and he liked the sound of it. I’ve got a really good feeling about it.”
Mick, who is part owner of Out of the Deep fishmongers located at Huntley’s, and director of online firm Freshfishbox.com, added: “We sold so much that first day we became Turf and Surf - the fish sold out in three hours!
“People are loving trying the live lobster and the taxi drivers have all been trying the brown shrimp.
“We’re offering things that people have never really tried before, and it’s completely turned the whole business around.
“The orders have really been coming in for Christmas as well, especially with the turkey and other meat.
“I just think it’s good to have everything under one roof.
“It’s a modern idea, and I really think it’s working well.”
