Leyland school hit by fire

Lancashire Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are tackling a blaze at St Mary’s Catholic Technology College in Leyland.

Residents of Leyland reported seeing huge plumes of smoke hanging above the town after the fire began on Sunday afternoon.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were dealing with the huge blaze at the Royal Avenue school. It is not known how the blaze began although it is believed it started in a single story area at 4pm.

Police were at the scene directing traffic and residents were advised to shut windows while some were leaving the scene.

Former pupil and parent Bev Reynolds said: “All I can say is I’m gutted for my own child starting there on Tuesday but I also have lots of memories there myself. It is a sad day for our parish.”
