Bosses at a care home which has been ordered to make improvements say a report from the CQC is not a ‘fair reflection’.

A report published by the Care Quality Commission into standards of care at Marsh House in Ulnes Walton Lane, Leyland, highlighted issues over the standards in safety and effectiveness.

Inspectors visited the home in November and published their report this week.

They raise issues relating to maintenance work needing to be carried out and concerns over food.

They say that, overall, the home requires improvement – although it was rated good in three of the five inspection areas, including being well-led, caring and responsive.

Inspectors said in their report: “The premises were maintained to a reasonable standard. However, some minor repair work was needed.

“The domestics trolley was unattended, and other areas of risk were not well assessed.

“Although menu choices were available, the provision of meals had changed since the last inspection.

“Most people we spoke with were now dissatisfied with the standard of food.

“People at risk of poor nutrition were not always sufficiently monitored.”

Mark Gilbert, owner of Dovehaven Care Group, which runs the home, said: “The first thing I would say is I have a respect for the CQC, they do a great job. I have got 16 homes.

“I have known and worked with the CQC for 30 years, they have a difficult job to do, they do very well.

“This is a new inspection system that they have brought out. Marsh House is one of the first to be inspected.

“To me, 95 per cent of everything at Marsh House is good but, because five per cent was said to need improving, the way the report is scored, it means it comes out as ‘requires improvement’. It is not really a fair reflection.

“There’s five areas of the inspection. The things we need to improve on are, in my opinion, very minor.

“But we take on board the inspection and will work with the CQC.”
