A world record attempt fell just short of the mark as dozens of hockey players took to the pitch.

Leyland and Chorley Hockey Club wanted to break the record for the most players in an exhibition match at UCLan Sports Arena on Sunday.

The current Guinness World Record stands at 257 playing in one match and the challenge was undertaken in aid of Preston hospice St Catherine’s.

But despite more than 150 showing up, the club fell 70 short in its effort although did raise around £400 for the Lostock Hall charity.

Organiser, Rob Alty, said: “The game went on for six hours 15 minutes with the score Leyland and Chorley 16, Preston 50.

“The event was a huge success despite not breaking the record. We have managed to strengthen relationships between clubs, involve our Back to Hockey players, enjoy a great day of fun and entertainment and raise the profile of the sport - all of this while raising money for St Catherine’s Hospice.

“We have showcased what our club is about and received many emails and messages of praise for the team. Personally I am really proud of the event and really enjoyed watching people as they received their certificates. Many people turned up with a view of playing 10 minutes but lasted longer because they enjoyed it so much.

“I want to thank UCLAN sports arena, Clearview Home Improvements, the Lancashire Hockey umpire association, the participants and the volunteers who made the day special.”
