Dog attack: owner fined

A man has been fined £1,800 and ordered to keep his dog muzzled in public after it killed another dog and injured its owner in an unprovoked attack in Leyland town centre.

Robert Price, 26, formerly of Fox Lane, Leyland, pleaded guilty to contravention of Section 3(1) Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 at Leyland Magistrates' Court on 5 January, 2011.

The Rottweiler broke out of Mr Price's former home in Fox Lane on 23 September, 2010, knocking dog walker Michael Atkinson to the ground, causing him to injure his hip and back.

The out-of-control dog also savaged and killed Mr Atkinson's Yorkshire Terrier Pip, shaking her "like a rag doll".

Mr Price, who now lives in Bessacar, Doncaster, was fined 300 and ordered to pay a 15 victim surcharge, legal costs of 602.50, kennel costs of 824 and 100 compensation to Mr Atkinson.

Magistrates also ordered that he must keep his dog on a lead and muzzled at all times when in a public. If he is caught breaking the order, his dog will be destroyed.
