Corrie actor to star at carnival

A popular TV personality is set to swap the cobbles of Coronation Street for the fields of Adlington as the star of the annual carnival.

Michael Le Vell, who plays mechanic Kevin Webster in the ITV soap, will put in a guest appearance at the carnival in August.

He will follow in the footsteps of stars including Cilla Black and Corrie's Jack and Vera who have all turned out for the event during its long history.

The carnival will kick-off on Friday August 14 with bingo in the marquee and the evening will also see the welcome return of the glamorous grandmother competition.

Also making a comeback for the popular weekend is the baby show on Sunday, August 16, which will run alongside the races, dog show and car boot sale.

Sunday will also see the arrival of Michael Le Vell as well as an It's a Knockout competition being run on the field.

Organisers are hoping that the heavy rain, which washed out last year's weekend and threatened its return this year, will hold off as the parade, including floats, walking groups, marching bands and dancing groups, takes to the streets of Adlington on Saturday, August 15.

Chorley boxer Michael Jennings will also join the carnival's hall of fame on the second day with Irish band The Bog Trotters taking to the marquee's stage at the night. They will be supported by duo Lovin It and comedians Tony Joe.

Spokesman for the carnival committee, Jennie Snape said: "Last year the carnival made a loss because of the bad weather so this year we are hoping it will be bigger and better than ever before.

"It costs more than 20,000 to put on so it is important that the people of Chorley and Adlington turn out to support the carnival and help us raise money for charity.

"As the organisers we don't make a single penny for ourselves we just do it because we love the carnival weekend and want to support the charities.

"We've been working really hard to make sure it is a brilliant event and it is good to have Michael Le Vell and Michael Jennings coming along and I'm sure they'll both prove very popular with the crowds.

"Businesses from across Adlington have been busy supporting us this year, but if anyone can donate prizes, help with the organising or volunteer over the weekend then we'd like to hear from them.

"The main message is that we just need people to come along and support us and have fun."

The events will start at 7.30pm on Friday August 14 and will run all weekend. Programmes will be available from shops across Adlington within the coming weeks. They cost 3.50 each and give free admittance to the field on both Saturday and Sunday.

Usual admission fee will be 3.50 with tickets for the marquee event on Saturday night costing 12.50.
