Jazzing it up with Debbie
A Leyland singer is to make a special appearance with a very special BBC award-winning musician, for an unforgettable night of jazz.
Debbie Wilson, of Crawford Avenue in Leyland, will be performing on May 12 at the Eagle and Child in Weeton, near Preston, with saxophonist Simon Spillet.
The duo, who are partners off stage, rarely perform together but will be offering a night of 'great swinging jazz', with tunes by the likes of Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers and Jerome Kern.
Simon won the BBC Jazz Award for Rising Star in 2007 and has carved a career as one of the UK's best jazz saxophonists, broadcasting on radio and appearing at celebrated venues such as Ronnie Scott's and the Brecon Jazz Festival.
The musician, who hails from Buckinghamshire, has also recorded two albums.
Debbie has worked at jazz festivals such as Wigan and Preston and has recently recorded in London with legendary jazz drummer Martin Drew, formerly with Oscar Peterson.
The couple met nearly two years ago when Simon was playing a gig in Rawtenstall, in Lancashire and have since worked together on just a few occasions, at gigs such as the Birmingham International Jazz Festival.
The pair have been performing professionally for around 15 years, and their shared tastes help them work well together.
Simon told the Guardian: "We both love the same kind of music and Debbie sings beautifully. She always sings the best songs."
Mother-of-three Debbie said that she thinks that people respond so well to the pair because they offer a good mix of instrumental and vocal performances of 'accessible jazz'.
She said: "Together we offer something that we think a wide audience can enjoy."
The show will be an extra-special affair for the couple, as the pub is run by Debbie's brother, Michael Baines, so many of their friends and family will be going along too.
The musical duo will be accompanied by a trio led by pianist Dan Whieldon, winner of the 2008 National Jazz Piano Competition, with BBC musicians Peter Wilmott on bass and Paul Turner on drums.
The performance will begin at 8.30pm. For more information contact The Eagle and Child 01253 836230
