Laura shares her Mexican story

Eccleston ex-pat Laura De Luna, formerly Laura Crompton, now lives in Mexico with her husband Hugo, in Monterrey.

Laura, who has sent pictures of herself posing with a Chorley Guardian at a Mexican festival, moved to the North American city in January 2008.

The former Bishop Rawstorne pupil whose parents live in The Green, Eccleston, said: "My husband Hugo and I moved to Monterrey when Hugo was transferred here with work.

"I had previously worked for a public relations consultancy firm, but once I settled in to Monterrey life I decided to change my career and I set-up a relocations company with another British girl that I had met over here.

"There aren't many British people living in Monterrey, but there is a reasonable size ex-pat community - most of whom are Americans, plus I speak Spanish so I have made Mexican friends too."

Comparing Chorley to her new Mexican home town, Laura added: "Monterrey is very different from Chorley. Apart from the obvious things like the language and culture, Monterrey has a population of almost five million.

"The weather is also a massive change - summer temperatures frequently top 40 degrees and the winter, which occassionaly, but not often, reaches freezing, lasts only two to three months."

Speaking to the Guardian via email, Laura, who studied in LA and Cuba as part of a degree course at the University of Manchester, said of her experience of living so far away from home: "I have missed friends and family although it has not been as hard as I thought and I am able to keep up with everyone using the internet.

"I also miss British television especially Coronation Street and the X-Factor, but I have also been able to watch some of the programmes over the internet."

It seems that living a jet-set life style may also run in the family as Laura's brother David Crompton's story featured in the Guardian last week. David is currently attempting to travel across the world in a Land Rover.

The Guardian is re-launching its ex-pat service on the internet as part of the new added extras now available online.

As well as the ex-pat section, that we are hoping to get up and running, our new supplements will now be available to read online as electronic magazines and free premiership highlights can be watched on the Guardian website.
