Gym bunnies are gearing up for an exciting new outdoor exercise area in Leyland.

A £10,000 project is being launched to create four mini outdoor gyms in green spaces across Broadfield.

The idea, which is already popular in hot climates abroad, will feature seven pieces of heavy-duty equipment on a special exercise route, and is being dubbed an ‘adults’ play area’.

Rebecca Heap, South Ribble Council’s community involvement manager, said: “We started looking at this a few months ago after feedback from the public suggested people struggle to get to the gym, or pay for membership, but we think this is much less daunting, and much more fun.

“It’s like an adult’s play area, and it’s the first time we’ve done anything like this in Leyland.”

Broadfield’s High Green, Low Green, Wood Green and St John’s Green will each have some equipment, from a seated leg press to a double cross country skier.

There will also be circuit boards with instructions, and the grant funding includes provision for a person to train groups on how to make the most of the new gyms.

Rebecca said: “It’s great for people just walking past who want to have a quick go, or for people who want to spend an hour there on a sunny day.

“It might be that a group of mums all go together when their children are in play school, and we’re really hoping this takes off.

“If it’s popular, we may be able to roll it out across other areas of Leyland.”

She added: “We want to install the equipment towards the end of summer to tie in with the Olympics and children going back to school in September.

“We’re focusing on the childrens’ playgrounds at the minute ready for the school holidays, then we’ll start looking at this project in detail.”
