200 empty premises 'sign of the times'
More than 200 commercial premises in South Ribble are empty and unused.
The data, which was released by South Ribble Council under the Freedom of Information Act, show 205 shops and industrial units were empty in May.
South Ribble Council, Lancashire County Council, the NHS and Ainscough Properties are among landowners named.
Also on the list are former pubs, petrol stations, the Leyland Motors Test Track and land owned by supermarket giants Tesco.
Tim Campbell, managing director of Campbell's Commercial Vehicle Marketing Group, said it was a sign of the 'recession having an effect'.
Mr Campbell, a member of the Leyland Forward Board, added: "Leyland is no different from anywhere. We're all suffering.
"Commercial property is an indication of what's happening to consumer confidence. Eventually there will be a feeding frenzy when people think it's a good time to jump in."
The council – which owns 160 commercial properties – has 11 on the list. Two have since been occupied and a third tenant will move into another on July 1.
Coun Stephen Robinson, cabinet member for finance, said: "The South Ribble business community is kept regularly updated about business news and developments, and this includes information about empty commercial properties in South Ribble, including premises owned by the council.
"Feedback from our commercial tenants tells us that they consider the council to be a good and reasonable landlord. This reputation helps us to ensure we have few empty commercial premises at one time."
