20mph limits are enforced on streets

Underway: Work has started to turn residential roads in Chorley and Leyland into 20mph zones

Work is now underway to turn residential roads into 20mph zones in Chorley and Leyland.

Areas in Euxton and Hough Lane in Leyland are the first to be targeted by Lancashire County Council, in a bid to reduce the number of road accidents involving children and young people.

The council also wants to encourage cycling and walking, and rather than installing further traffic calming measures such as speed humps and chicanes, signs will be installed by the end of 2013 on all residential streets in Lancashire.

The new limits will become legally enforceable soon, and the Bagganley/Crosse Hall area of Chorley and the Woodville Street area in Farington are also being prioritised.

County Councillor Tim Ashton, Cabinet member for highways and transport at LCC, said: “People are much more likely to survive and have fewer injuries if involved in an accident at 20mph than 30mph, and lowering speeds will make our neighbourhoods better and safer places for everyone.”

Community Road Watch schemes will see volunteers work alongside neighbourhood policing teams to monitor speeds to address road safety concerns raised by residents.

As ever cyclist think they own the roads and now pavements.... What a bunch of self righteous free loaders they don’t pay any road tax, don’t need insurance, no MOT. And they all think that just because they ride their bikes that they own the highway. Anyone found riding a bike over the age of 18 should be made to pay to use the roads. My road tax and council tax even pays for cycle ways for them ...what a bunch of freeloaders. I say to them Cough up or Shut up

I’am a cyclist, a pedestrian and a motorist and have made that connection, that I share the roads with others. Not us and them, i.e. motorists and cyclists or motorists and pedestrians. Its good to see young peoplecyclists playing in the streets as the road is theirs and a 20mph speed limit this will happen more. We have lost all of this, streets belong to the car, i.e. “Roads are for cars”, and this has been advertised since the 1930’s by the motoring lobby. Roads are for the community, roll on the Healthy Street program.

I personally am in favour of any speeding restrictions in the area, anything that helps to save lives or prevent terrible injuries has to be a good idea. Too many idiots are driving around like it's Brands Hatch. But there is lots more that can be done. Something has to be done about cyclists riding around at night without lights, somebody is going to get killed. How about more traffic police on the streets to catch morons who don't indicate and treat roundabouts like a playstation game ? Or morons that treat 'two into one roads' as a license to drive dangerously, putting lives at risk ? I also agree with the previous poster about yellow lines. At times they are essential for traffic flow but surely they shouldn't be everywhere ! We pay our taxes, let us park ! Can somebody give me a job in road safety, I'm sure I could have some good ideas !

Having to share pedestrian pavements with cyclist's is lunacy . Only last week,a very aggressive cyclist was bawling me out for stepping into HIS RIGHTFUL AREA.Cyclists used to do a great job of traffic calming just by being on the road,The powers that be are consistently squandering our cash on useless ideas .They paint yellow lines everywhere,so that vehicles are free to charge around at ridiculous speeds, then they install road humps to slow them down. What a waste of taxpayers money, and now ive got to share the pavements with idiotic cyclists.Im a car driver myself, and i find he best deterrent to speed is parked cars and cyclists.De-regulating parking restrictions will slow everyone down.TJB.
