Some evening and Sunday bus services are set to be scrapped in Leyland and South Ribble next year.

Lancashire County Council (LCC) has announced the proposals to withdraw funding for evening, Sunday and bank holiday services that currently receive council subsidies to allow them to operate.

The council must save £300m between the years 2014 and 2018, and has announced it plans to reduce support for buses to save £3.8m over two years.

In Leyland, the 109 and 113 services are affected, as these are operated by Stagecoach midweek during the day and on Saturdays, but subsidised and operated by LCC after 6pm midweek, and on Sundays and bank holidays.

People are now being asked for their views on the proposals, which will be considered by the council’s cabinet in February.

If approved, it will mean subsides will be withdrawn from 72 evening and Sunday services across the county, from May 18, 2014.

Subsidies would continue to 103 bus services which operate during the day, but each will be reviewed on a case by case basis when its current contract expires ‘to ensure it remains sustainable’.

County Councillor John Fillis, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We would never have chosen to be in this financial situation but have to find ways to drastically reduce our budget due to cuts imposed by central government.

“I’m fully aware that the withdrawal of any bus service would have an impact upon the people who use it.

“These are proposals at this stage and no decision will be taken without carefully considering the results of this consultation.”

People can view the consultation documents and the full list of services affected at www.lancashire.gov.uk/haveyoursay from now until January 10.
