A man has admitted planting a fake bomb which led to a nine hour siege and more than 100 homes being evacuated.

Jann Nirmal, 39, pleaded guilty to having the bomb in Mendip Road, Clayton-le-Woods, at a hearing at Preston Crown Court.

The hoax caused chaos in the area when police responded to a call that a man had a bomb in his flat.

The area was sealed and bomb squad officers and trained negotiators were sent in.

Officers stormed into the property after a nine-hour impasse and arrested Nirmal, now of Broad Oak Road, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Manchester.

In total, 108 properties on Mendip Road were evacuated and 25 residents were transported in buses throughout the day to South Ribble Tennis Centre, where British Red Cross volunteers set up a rest centre for those affected.

Others sought refuge at the nearby Hayrick pub, off Lancaster Lane, as crowds of onlookers gathered around the police cordon.

Parents with children at nearby Manor Lane Primary School were alerted to the incident and some chose to pick their children up early, although the school remained open despite the security operation.

Fire crews, police dogs, and staff from gas and electricity companies were also called to deal with the incident.

Nirmal was arrestaed at 5pm and taken to hospital.

He admitted a single count of placing a hoax bomb during the incident on March 23.

He will appear at Preston Crown Court for sentence on November 11.
