Community cinema is big hit

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

A special film and food night staged to test the market for a community cinema in Leyland has proved a big hit with local film fans.

The pilot screening of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel at the Civic Centre council building in West Paddock was a sell-out, with the movie and two-course meal deal getting good feedback from cinemagoers.

Now, South Ribble Council is planning a repeat performance with another film and food offer, in order to assess whether there is enough public appetite to start regular screenings in Leyland.

The council, which has been successfully showing family films at the Civic Centre for several years, believes there may be local demand to see movies appealing to an older audience on the big screen as well.

Coun Phil Smith, cabinet member with responsibility for regeneration, leisure and healthy communities, said: “We are looking at ways to encourage our residents and visitors to spend longer in Leyland, supporting the evening economy, local shops and businesses.

“We believe a cinema could be one of the ways of achieving that, but a commercial operation is unlikely to come into the town in the current climate.

“The film and food night offered great value for money and I’m pleased that people really enjoyed both the film and the excellent food served by our Coppice restaurant. If they continue to be popular, we hope to hold more food and film nights in the future.”
