Conmen told: Come off it!
Conmen got more than they bargained for when they tried to talk their way into the home of two Leyland pensioners.
Quick-thinking Dorothy and Bob Ireland gave the bogus water board men a stern ticking off - with 77-year-old Dorothy telling them: "We don't need conmen around here."
The couple were targeted by the two men at their home on Railway Street in Leyland on Thursday August 22 at 12.15pm.
They have told the Leyland Guardian about what happened to them in a bid to warn other vulnerable people who may be targeted by the men.
Dorothy, a retired cleaner, said: "As soon as I answered the door I didn't like the look of them. I asked where was their authority and identification and their work van.
"They didn't even have a uniform on.
"They told me they had parked their van around the corner and needed to get into our home to turn off a water valve - they said it was very important and that if the valve blew it would blow the roof off our house.
"I told them: 'Come off it - don't talk so daft. You are conmen, and we don't need you around here'. They didn't say a word."
Dorothy slammed the door in their faces and watched the men walk into the middle of the road eyeing up the street, before walking off.
