Council leader recovering from dog bite
The leader of South Ribble Council says she is recovering well after being bitten by a dog.
The Guardian reported last month how Coun Margaret Smith suffered a nasty bite to two of her fingers while delivering Conservative leaflets in the Wade Hall area.
Coun Smith said: "I'm very wary of dogs anyway and usually carry a device which emits an ultra-sonic sound, but I didn't have it on me.
"As I put my hand through I felt my two fingers on my right hand grabbed. I was just stuck there with my hand through the letterbox.
"Fortunately my husband Phil was just round the corner because there was blood everywhere.
"I went to Chorley Hospital and had to have five or six stitches because the bite nearly went right through."
Coun Smith said she accepted she was "on the dog's territory", but asked police to speak to the owner.
She added: "I just wanted them to be alerted to what had happened.
"It could have been anybody, a child on a paper round for example.
"I was satisfied to leave it at that.
"This is the first time I've been injured in 20 odd years of leafleting, but having said that, even a seasoned leafleter can still be caught out."
A spokesman for Lancashire Police confirmed: "The victim reported the bite to us. It was recorded and we spoke to the owner to give advice - as requested by the victim.
"No further action is being taken at this time."
