Councillors back 'go slow' call
A campaign to tackle speeding in a Leyland road notorious for accidents has won support from South Ribble councillors.
Mum-of-two Colette Clarke took her campaign to have speed restrictions introduced in Dunkirk Lane to the Leyland West Area Committee and more than 30 residents turned out to support her.
Colette, who launched the campaign after a series of accidents outside her home, said: "The meeting went really well and there was plenty of support for the restrictions from residents living in Dunkirk Lane.
"The councillors told us that they will support our campaign and they will contact Lancashire County Council to see what can be done.
"We need a permanent solution to the problem as there has been another accident this week.
"We need to think about what we need to do next and we may start a petition."
Coun Alan Ogilvie, chairman of the Leyland West Area Committee, said: "There was a good number of residents at the meeting specifically for the issue of speeding in Dunkirk Lane which is clearly important because it effects the safety of our residents.
"It was explained that this is a highways issue for Lancashire County Council, but all the local councillors present are certainly going to raise the issue at the next Lancashire Local and do everything we can to try and find a resolution to it.
"The things that were discussed were generally about speeding restriction suggestions such as the possibility of mini-roundabouts, a fixed speed camera or other measures that would help.
"We did also point out that being realistic, the LCC only have a certain budget for road issues and are going to target that on their highest priorities.
"It is up to us to find the evidence to make Dunkirk Lane a high priority."
A spokesman for LCC, which is responsible for the highways, said: "We carried out signing and lining in Dunkirk Lane a number of years ago which we do believe has had an impact.
"There are not any plans in place to carry out any further work but we will look at the campaign."
