Criminals will reap the Cyclone...

DRUG dealers in South Ribble will be a prime target as the police launch a two week blitz on crime.

A team of police officers will clamp down on drug dealers across the borough as Operation Cyclone is launched this week.

The operation will focus on Class A drugs, as well as burglary, vehicle crime, anti-social behaviour and criminals travelling in from outside Lancashire.

Residents are being warned they can expect to see plenty of police activity over the next two weeks.

Previous similar operations have been highly successful with numerous arrests and seizures of drugs, including cocaine and heroin, as well as quantities of cannabis.

Police in the borough have been gathering intelligence from surveillance exercises on known offenders in the area and are ready to pounce as part of the latest operation.

Insp Andy Maughan of Leyland Police said: "Cyclone has been run on numerous occasions with good results.

"We are confident from the intelligence we have gathered that we will be very successful in targeting and arresting our most prolific criminals."

A special team of officers will be ready to be sent to any location in the borough day or night.

Uniformed officers, the drug unit, the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system and divisional support unit will all assist.

The ANPR equipment uses pattern recognition to read vehicle number plates and convert the image into text.

The information is then cross referenced with a variety of databases, including the DVLA.

It allows police to identify known criminals travelling into the borough and can help trace stolen, uninsured and untaxed vehicles.

Anyone who has any information about any crimes covered by Operation Cyclone should call Leyland Police on 01772 421601 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
