A Leyland dad faced with the fear he could go blind is trying to raise money to find a cure for his eye disease.
Glynn Ogden, age 32 from Farington Moss, has been diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), an inherited eye disease that causes severe vision impairment and blindness.
His partner, Clare Webb, said: “Glynn first found he had problems around three years ago when he went for a routine check-up at the opticians, and they found blind spots in his left eye.
“It has taken until February this year for him to get the diagnosis of RP because it usually affects both eyes simultaneously.
“In Glynn’s case, only the left eye is currently affected, so that makes him pretty rare.”
She added: “Glynn has minimal vision in his left eye but is lucky because he can still live a normal life.
“The biggest issue for him is the emotional strain. He is terrified of losing his sight and at the age of 40 he knows that this is a realistic prospect.
“That would significantly affect both our lives and that of our five children, as he would no longer be able to work as a self-employed joiner.
“He would also lose his driving licence.
“I think the hardest thing for him is dealing with the unknown.
“I think because his form of the condition is so rare and none of the consultants have witnessed it before, nobody can really give him an idea of what might happen.”
There is currently no treatment or preventative cure for RP, and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) is raising funds to help research into the disease.
Suzanne Dennis Optometrist in Eccleston held a Hawaiian summer sunglasses party in aid of Glynn and RNIB, and raised £80 for the cause.
Now, Clare and Glynn are preparing to take part in the Carrot Night Walk in London in September, to raise more awareness and money.
“I find this is the best way to support him,” Clare said. “The charity walk creates a positive out of all of this.”
