Day centre unveils plan for community facilities

Revamp: Day centre on West Paddock

A day centre for disabled people has unveiled plans for a revamp.

Crossways says it wants to create more modern facilities at its base in West Paddock, Leyland, to provide better services for people with disabilities and learning difficulties.

The centre, part of which dates back to the late 1960s, has now lodged a planning application with South Ribble Council.

A planning and design statement submitted by the applicants, Lancashire County Council (LCC), says the building needs upgrading.

It adds: “Crossways is a building that desperately requires upgrading and making modern and fit for purpose to support people with more complex and long-term needs.

“As well as continuing the services currently offered, LCC will then have the opportunity to increase the facilities and the offer to all sectors of the local community.”

Planners want to demolish part of the building that is ‘weathered at dated’ and rebuild it to match the remaining block, and the homes nearby.

They also want to build a new car park and move an area that was used for Travel Care buses to the back of the site.

They will then create a sensory garden, and provide landscaping, fencing, and more lighting and CCTV.

One tree will be removed, and another one replanted in its place.

Under the plans, the main entrance will be accessed from the car park, with another access to kitchen facilities.

The scheme is part of a county-wide project, approved in 2008, to modernise day services for people with learning disabilities.

The applicants said: “Historically, Crossways was a service for people with learning disability.

“Now, it is a shared resource for people with learning disabilities and people with physical disabilities or sensory impairment.

“It desperately needs upgrading.”
