Dog walker fighting for life after accident

Car crash on the junction of Heald House Road and Bent Lane, Leyland

A Leyland mum is fighting for her life in hospital after she was hit by a car in the town last week.

The 51-year-old, from Lynton Avenue, was struck by a silver Toyota Aygo when she was out walking her dog last Tuesday, February 12.

The incident happened close to the roundabout at Bent Lane, Church Road and Heald House Road, when a 69-year-old female driver veered across the road.

The pedestrian is said to have suffered multiple head and chest injuries, and was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital after a desperate neighbour tried to resuscitate her.

Speaking at the scene, Peter Evans, who lives on Bent Lane, said: “I heard a loud bang and came out to find the lady on the floor.

“I called an ambulance and did everything the operator told me to do over the phone; I was pumping her chest with another man who came to help, but she was unconscious.

“I’m really in shock.

“You see the odd bump on that junction but I’ve never seen anything this serious before.

“The elderly lady driver of the car was very shaken up too. It’s all a bit of a blur.”

The driver, who also lives nearby, was taken to hospital in an ambulance but did not sustain any physical injuries.

An investigation is now underway to ascertain the cause of the collision, which happened at around 2.45pm, and police are appealing for any witnesses to contact them.

Sergeant Mick Young, from the Force Road Policing Unit, this week described the woman’s condition as still being ‘critical’.

He added: “Her injuries are life-threatening.

“The driver was turning onto Bent Lane from Church Road and lost control of the car; she collided with the pedestrian who was walking her dog.

“This is a serious incident and I’d appeal to anybody who witnessed this collision who hasn’t yet spoken with police to come forward.”

Fire crews also attended the scene after initial reports that the car was on fire.

The dog had returned home of its own accord.

Anyone who witnessed the collision should contact police on 101.
