Firm faces knife crisis

Staff at a Leyland security firm are to be issued with stab-proof vests because of the growing knife culture.

The Kudos Group, which is based in Worden Park, provide everything from manned security staff and mobile patrols, to keyholding services and training.

They say the 250 vests will be given to staff deemed to be most at risk.

The firm, which has 10 full time office staff and a pool of around 100 security workers, has ordered the first batch of five stab-proof vests but expect this figure to rise.

The initiative is the idea of Kudos' new group business development director, Mark Prendergast, who was himself threatened with a knife earlier this year before he joined the company.

The 36-year-old was working as a doorman at a city nightclub when a troublemaker he'd ejected pulled a 4in knife on him.

He said: "The workers have welcomed the measure and it's a very pro-active move.

"Every day there seems to be a stabbing in country and we don't want our staff to become victims."
