Funding is given to Farington

Community groups and organisations in Farington are being invited to bid for a slice of a new £100,000 fund being launched to boost the area.
Farington Community Fund is being set up by Lancashire County Council, which jointly runs the Farington Waste Technology Park with Global Renewables, as a ‘gesture of goodwill’ following the ‘inconvenience’ experienced by residents due to odours coming from the waste site.
The fund, which was officially launched on Monday, aims to support good causes and help as many local projects as possible.
County Coun Albert Atkinson, deputy leader of Lancashire County Council, said: “There is a significant amount of money in this fund and it presents a real opportunity for people in Farington to have an influence in how it is spent to improve their local area.
“We’d like to support as many projects as possible and I’d encourage groups to come forward with their ideas.
“I’m sorry that people have had to put up with bad smells from the waste recovery park and hope the improvements as a result of this fund will provide some recompense for the inconvenience and leave a positive legacy.”
A special panel with representatives from the county council, South Ribble Council, Farington Parish Council and the local community has been formed to consider funding applications. Groups can apply for grants to support community and environmental projects which benefit local residents within the parish of Farington.
Bids for funding must:
- Enhance and protect the local environment;
- Benefit the community;
- Be made by an established group or charity.
The money has been provided from deductions in the council’s payments to Global Renewables, as a result of the company not fulfilling its obligations after the smells continued to linger on for years.
Tim Carter, chairman of the Residents Against Waste Site action group (RAWS), said that whilst the funding was welcome, it was just a ‘drop in the ocean’.
He said: “It is better than nothing, but LCC and Global Renewables have been responsible for adversely affecting the lives of so many local people for a long time.
“The council has refused to disclose how much money it has withheld from the firm in total, but I suspect it is a lot more than £100,000, so this is just a drop in the ocean for us.
“It is welcome though, and I would encourage people to apply for it.”
