Funeral takes place of Leyland marine

Leyland came to a standstill today (Thursday) to pay their final respects to a local hero.

Hundreds lined the streets close to St Andrew's Church in Worden Lane to honour Marine Paul Warren, 23, who was killed in Afghanistan on June 21 .

Office workers, shopkeepers, builders and families all stood together in solemn unity as the marine's three - car cortege, which was flanked by police escorts, made its way through the town from 10.30am.

The flower strewn funeral cars started from Marine Warren's childhood home in Ingleborough Way before making their final journey through Hough Lane, where scores of shoppers paused to pay their respects.

One construction worker stopped working momentarily to do the sign of the cross as the funeral cars passed him on Turpin Green Lane.

Hundreds gathered in silent dignity outside the church and the car park at Tesco was packed with cars. Many motorists even had to abandon their vehicles outside parking bays because of a lack of space.

In the street workers from Chadwicks Solicitors, Leyland Leisure Centre and Tesco, among others, all lined the streets with family and friends to say goodbye as a gun salute led Marine Warren's coffin into church at 11am.

After the service there was a private burial in the church grounds.
