Get ready for a festive version of Leyland Live

Leyland Live festival organiser Nigel Stewart is celebrating the success of the event

Christmas may have been somewhat forgotten in Leyland town centre in recent years - but not this time!

The man behind Leyland Festival’s popular Leyland Live music festival has revealed he wants to do something similar during the festive season, and says there’s more fun planned for the town this December.

Nigel Stewart, a drummer and former university lecturer from Penwortham, has volunteered to organise a Leyland Christmas festival, after more than 1,200 people turned out for July’s event.

He said: “People have been asking if we’ll be doing Leyland Live for the new festival date in September, after the parade and Worden Park activities were cancelled in July because of the park being flooded.

“I’m sorry to say that we won’t be able to arrange something of that scale in time for the new festival - it takes a lot of planning to get so many artists and venues on board.

“There will be performers at Worden Arts Centre on Worden Park, which was the plan for the original festival, but I’m hoping to stage a big event over the Christmas period now.”

He said all of the 12 town centre venues which hosted Leyland Live are keen to get involved in any future plans he has, and he’s now appealing for more business owners, as well as artists, to come forward for the winter show.

“It’s very early days,” he said. “But I think it could be just as successful, if not more so because of the hype Leyland Live created.

“I’m looking to do something along the same lines, with a two-day event.

“I think there are plans to have late-night shopping and themed market stalls in Leyland too, so it will tie in nicely with that to have evening entertainment.”

He added: “I know Preston and Chorley have Christmas light switch-on events, so it’ll be great for Leyland to have something special as well.”

- The new Leyland Festival is set to take place on September 22 and 23.
