Grandad Jim’s Traditional Sweet Shoppe comes to town

Andrew Dickinson is like a kiddie in a sweetshop.
The businessman is starting up a new confectionery business on Chapel Brow in Leyland. But there’s nothing modern about it.
Grandad Jim’s Traditional Sweet Shoppe boasts 150 types of sweets, plus a special fudge counter.
It’s named after Andrew’s grandad Jim, who lived in Leyland all his life, and had a soft spot for humbugs.
Andrew, 27, who lives on Canberra Road, said: “We’ve got a framed picture of my grandad on the wall, He loved his humbugs, so it just came naturally that it was named after him. In fact, looking at our pink and black striped walls, the entire shop looks like a giant humbug.”
But does the thought of setting up a business in a recession scare Andrew? Not one bit.
“Even if you’re in the middle of a recession everyone needs something to cheer them up,” he said. “This is it.
“I spent eight years working in the plumbing industry, but I always wanted my own shop.
“This is the kind of thing I’m really excited about.
“We’ve got all of the old-fashioned sweets that people will remember from their childhood, plus loads of chocolate, and a fudge counter.
“We’ve also got a few children’s books and some old-fashioned wooden toys. I don’t think there’s anything like this in Leyland. You have to travel a long way to get something like this.”
Andrew, who is running the shop with his wife Mary, around looking after their two young children, says the best part of the job is trying out the produce.
He said: “You’ve got to know your products! I get to try some every day. It is a perk.
“We’re really excited about this, and hope it will be popular with everyone from children to older people, who want to remember sweets they grew up with.”
The shop will be officially opened by the Mayor of South Ribble, Coun Jim Marsh, on February 11.

Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 04:06 PMI want to wish you lots of luck with your sweet shop. As one who used to live in Leyland I can just picture where your shop is located. Sorry I can't drop in but I am here in Arizona about 6,000 miles from dear old England.
