Flooding in Croston over the weekend, Church Street

Roads were flooded and homes put at risk after heavy rain brought chaos to the county.

The worst hit area was Croston where the main road was closed on Friday and homeowners were using sandbags in a bid to prevent flooding.

The River Yarrow burst it banks forcing the police to shut Town Road.

Police said 40 homes were being monitored.

Stuart Stephenson is landlord at The Grapes pub in Croston, which overlooks the River Yarrow.

He said a defence wall had been built following previous flooding in the village.

He said: “We’ve got a bit of a river going on out the front. Someone canoed past.”

Around four houses in Top O’ the Lane in Brindle needed the help of firefighters to remove water from their basements.

Resident Becky Cohen, 22, said: “The neighbours all got together and helped remove anything sentimental and the firefighters sucked the water out. “It was just the houses with basements affected by the heavy rain.”

The Environment Agency issued 10 flood alerts across the North West on Friday including on the River Ribble, River Lostock, River Darwen, River Yarrow and River Wyre.

They include lower River Ribble and Darwen covering Preston, Walton-le-Dale, Higher Walton and Samlesbury, the Rivers Yarrow and Lostock from Whittle-le-Woods and Chorley to Croston, including Leyland, Bamber Bridge and Lostock Hall, and the Rivers Wyre, Calder and Brock including Garstang, Catterall and Bilsborrow.
