One of the links to the Leyland Paints brand in the town has closed down.

Leyland Paints started back in 1922 and their success increased over the years as the business grew from the original site in Leyland with 24 staff to more than 1,000 employees by the mid 1960s.

The firm has survived many company buyouts and over the last 40 years Leyland has evolved from a listed company based in Lancashire to become part of the portfolio of PPG Industries, a Global leader in coatings.

But, since the mid 1980s Leyland has been manufactured in Birstall, West Yorkshire. The former Leyland Paints store on East Street has since been replaced by a Johnstone Paints Decorating Centre.

However the Leyland Paints brand is still going to available in the town at CW Berrys.

On Friday, the East Street shop shut its doors for the last time and has resulted in one employee being relocated.

Of the other two remaining staff – one has been made redundant and the other is available to cover holidays at other stores.

Gina Laycock, Decorating Centre Marketing Manager, said: “Whilst the closure of any store is regrettable, it is important to note that we are, in fact, investing heavily in our network of Johnstone’s Decorating Centres across the UK and Ireland.

“Nowhere has this investment been more significant than at our branch on North Road in Preston, just four miles away from the Leyland store. The branch is benefitting from an advertising campaign in the local press, as well as a large number of improvements to the store itself, such as the introduction of a brand new 148-strong wallpaper collection, which puts it in a select few stores in the UK and Ireland to have such an offer.

“Our focus remains on providing high quality products and first class service to our loyal customers and we look forward to them seeing first hand the improvements we have been making to our Decorating Centres.”
