Leyland Cross cobbles ripped up
The cobbles around the Leyland Cross have been replaced with asphalt
Cobbles surrounding Leyland’s historic village cross have been ripped up and replaced with asphalt.
Residents were today ‘horrified’ at the move, in what is part of Leyland’s only conservation area.
But because the cobbles, known as setts, were a later addition, and not original features of what is believed to be an ancient monument, Lancashire County Council decided to pull them up and lay the road with a ‘safer’ surface.
The council also wants to minimise the amount of repair work – it has been called out 15 times in the past three years.
But members of the community say the area has been destroyed by the work, which took place last week.
Jay Nicholas, chairman of Fox Lane Community Group, said: “I can’t believe they’ve been allowed to do this.
“People are horrified because the cross has been there for centuries, and taking away the cobbles makes it more vulnerable.
“It has no protection from people and cars, and now it’s only a matter of time before a driver goes too fast round the bend and hits the cross.
“Residents feel this move is devaluing the area. It’s not right.”
