Leyland Festival cancelled - but Leyland Live music event will go ahead
The much-anticipated Leyland Festival has been postponed due to the bad weather.
The plug has been pulled on the two-day event, which was set to take place in the town centre with a procession on Saturday and attractions at Worden Park all weekend.
It now looks set to take place sometime in September.
The decision was taken on Friday lunchtime by the Festival Committee, which is made up of members of the community and South Ribble Council, after a site visit to Worden Park showed that it would be impossible to host the event there.
The playing fields were flooded, and although most of the attractions were set to take place under shelter, the grass was not fit for purpose.
Coun Phil Smith, the council’s cabinet for regeneration, leisure and healthy communities, said: “I’m terribly disappointed that this weekend’s festivities have had to be postponed, especially after all the hard work which has gone on for the last few months from right across the community.
“I’ve never seen Worden Park in this state before, and it looked like it was only going to get worse over the weekend.”
Dance displays, dog shows, heritage vehicles and stalls were set to fill the park this weekend, with many tickets already being sold in recent weeks to gain entry.
Now, people are being told to keep hold of their tickets for the event in September.
Coun Smith added: “We’re determined to reschedule for later in the summer, when we can have the great festival that everyone wants, rather than a muddy washout.
“The council and our friends on the Leyland Festival Committee will be speaking to everyone involved over the next few weeks.”
The Leyland Live music festival, which was organised to coincide with the town event, is still going ahead.
A host of bands and acts will perform at various venues in the town centre tonight and tomorrow, between 7pm and 11pm.
Volunteers at the British Commercial Vehicle Museum, on King Street, hope to hold a ‘mini’ version of the festival this weekend.
There will be entertainment and music, and guests can see some of the vehicles which were set to feature in town parade.
