A Leyland school, which had been blasted by Ofsted as inadequate, has now been deemed “good” by government inspectors.

Children and staff at St Catherine’s RC Primary School are celebrating after the watchdog praised pupil achievement, quality of teaching, pupils’ behaviour and safety and also leadership and management.

Associate headteacher Barbara Coulton said she was “absolutely delighted” with the result.

Mrs Coulton said: “It’s not been an easy ride and it’s a tribute to the resilience of staff and the children who absolutely responded and worked very hard.

“The accelerated progress they have made since September has been part of the reason for the judgement being good.”

She added: “Everybody works hard, everybody wants the best for the children and it’s a very strong governing body.

“The school as a whole is a very harmonious, hard-working community and we want to now move to outstanding – that’s the next stage.

“And there’s no reason why we shouldn’t. The children are an absolute delight.”

In October 2012, the Moss Lane school was judged to require special measures, and required monitoring visits in December 2012 and March, June, and December last year to check progress.

But following an inspection in March this year, all aspects of the school were deemed to be good.

Inspectors said pupils’ progress and achievement had “significantly improved” since the previous inspection, and teachers wanted to improve their own skills and do the best for their children.

The report said: “Pupils have good attitudes to learning. They want to learn because they are curious about the world and they want to please their teachers.

“Little time is lost during lessons and low-level disruption is rare because most pupils concentrate and get on with their work.”

It went on to say staff morale was high, and said: “The acting headteacher’s determination and commitment to improvement, and the partnership with the governing body, are fundamental to the improvement of this school.”
