The M6 southbound is closed due to a serious crash involving two cars.
The incident happened at 12.50pm - a 22-year-old man was trapped in his car and had to freed.
The male was taken to Wigan Infirmary for treatment to his injuries which were not thought to be life threatening.
Delays back up to Junction 31 and drivers face a wait of three hours.
The carriageway is fully closed whilst police are conducting their investigations.
An up and over diversion has been set up by police whilst investigations are being carried out.
All three emergency services attended the incident.
The Highways Agency are advising all drivers to use the M61 south to avoid the closures and heavy delays.
