Leyland is now in line to get a swanky new cocktail lounge above the town’s popular tea rooms.

The family behind Coppers Tea Rooms in the Old Police Station on Golden Hill Lane were given
planning permission to convert the offices upstairs into a new cocktail bar last week.

Speaking about the proposals, businessman Tim Campbell told South Ribble Council’s planning committee: “We’re very happy with how the tea rooms have taken off and we now want to give people somewhere to go in the evenings too.

“There are courtrooms upstairs with lovely wooden panelling, so we want to make that area into the cocktail lounge, and expand the tea rooms too.

“We’ve been attracting a lot of people from outside of Leyland, even as far away as New Zealand, because when local people have relatives visiting from out of the country, they always want to take them to a traditional English tea room.

“I think it’s quite a niche market for Leyland, and we want to look at the night-time economy now.”

He added: “People want somewhere in Leyland to go where they can dress up!”

Coppers acquired a licence to sell alcohol an open in the evenings a few months ago.

Tim, along with wife Pam, son Liam and daughter Jessica, have been testing the water with weekly ‘Cocktail in Teapots’ nights on Fridays.

The plans to open the space upstairs will allow around 60 extra customers to visit at a time, and will also create more jobs.

The opening times are expected to be 10am until 2am.

Although no letters of objection were received during the planning process, the Campbells are required to install ‘additional acoustic insulation’, such as secondary glazing on the windows, as part of the planning permission.

This will remove the potential for noise disturbance to neighbouring houses.

Speaking in favour of the scheme, councillor for Leyland Central, Caleb Tomlinson, said: “This will be absolutely fantastic.

“To be able to get off the train at Leyland and go for a Cosmopolitan cocktail at Coppers will be great.

“When you think of the regeneration that end of Leyland has seen recently, with the Railway pub and the Queens both getting makeovers, I think this is a great idea.”
