Oscar hopes for Leyland make-up artist

Mark Coulier

Mark Coulier

A multi award-winning make-up artist from Leyland is in line for an Oscar at this weekend’s ceremony.

Mark Coulier could walk away with the industry’s ultimate accolade for his work on The Iron Lady, starring Meryl Streep.

But the 48-year-old father of two, who was born and brought up in Farington where his dad Ray still lives, has no plans for a tearful acceptance speech.

He would just like to say ‘hi’ to his two children, Isabel, 12, and nine-year-old Ethan.

Mark, who admits to late nights in front of the television watching old Frankenstein movies, had already received a Bafta for his work on the film about former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Adding an Oscar to his awards, however, would be the ultimate achievement.

He said: “I’d be very honoured to win. It’s the golden boy, and in terms of career it really elevates you.”

Mark set off on the path to an artistic career after developing a passion for horror films.

He said: “I used to watch things like Them and Tarantula, but I was always forced to turn off when Coronation Street came on the other side.

“Sometimes I would go to bed and then my dad would wake me up at 11 o’clock at night to watch Frankenstein.

“I loved films like that from an early age and I very quickly recognised that people didn’t just look that way – someone was responsible for making them like that.”

Mark has already won a BAFTA for his work on the Iron Lady where he added almost 25 years to Meryl Streep to turn her into 86-year-old Maggie Thatcher.

The make-up, which involved attaching a full-face prosthetic with nose, cheeks and neck and hand painted lines and age spots, took a total of three hours each day to apply. Removing it at the end of the day’s shooting ruined it.

And his award collection also include two Emmys, for the mini series Merlin and for Arabian Nights.

This latest nomination, for best make-up, will be shared with Roy Helland, Meryl Streep’s personal make-up artist.
